Do you love belonging to a community of Indigenous life, thought and history? Indigenous Studies is an environment that fits you – the real you.
Not only do we embrace the traditions and cultures of our Indigenous community – but we celebrate it through finding ways to share, teach and spread it in the best way that we can. We do this with an amazing staff who live their everyday lives with community and teachings in mind. This includes our very own on Resident Elder, Barbara Nolan, who was recently the recipient of the 2021 Ontario Arts Council Indigenous Arts Award, the 2021 Indigenous Professional of the Year Award by Sault Ste Marie Chamber of Commerce, and the Sault Ste. Marie 2021 Medal of Merit.
We offer a unique learning environment that celebrates the languages, cultures and traditions of Indigenous and Métis students. Our curriculum incorporates cultural worldviews in addition to offering Indigenous-specific programs through our department. We are proud of our roots.
Here, education and life intersect. Students have access to Elders, Indigenous professors and instructors and can become involved in our Indigenous Student Council. We offer scholarships, bursaries, and awards specific to Indigenous students. Community is important here, so be sure to check out our student events, weekly soup days, feasts, annual Pow-wow and our Sacred Fire Arbour.
We`re here for you with our Indigenous Student Supports. These support services include tutoring, college application assistance and a positive, social environment through Enji Maawnjiding, the “Where We Gather” Indigenous Centre. With Indigenous staff located nearby, we`re here to ensure that your postsecondary learning experience is a great one.
