(Sault Ste. Marie, ON August 22, 2024) – This week, Sault College proudly recognized the outstanding commitment and dedication of several of its employees at its annual Service and Excellence Awards Ceremony. Surrounded by colleagues, employees – who were nominated by peers and selected by a peer review committee – were celebrated for outstanding work achievements through the College’s Northern Lights Employee Excellence Award program.
"As we prepare for the new academic year, it was great to gather and re-connect. We had the opportunity to celebrate major service milestones and recognize employees who go above and beyond, representing the values of the Northern Lights Employee Excellence Awards," said David Orazietti, President of Sault College. "These award recipients have made a real difference in the lives of students and colleagues, showing their dedication to excellence. We're proud to celebrate their achievements and their continued commitment."
The Northern Lights Employee Excellence Awards were created in 2006 to recognize excellence in any endeavour that enriches the community in which they serve. The objective of the Sault College Northern Lights Employee Excellence Award is to recognize and celebrate our people’s exceptional efforts in a variety of categories and in alignment with the actions of our Strategic Plan.
Northern Lights Employee Excellence Award Recipients
Amanda Formolo
Amanda exemplifies a spirit of generosity and care that positively impacts those around her. Her contributions range from personally funding and donating over 100 food items to the student food bank, to going above and beyond in nominating deserving students for awards. Amanda also brings holiday cheer to her peers with homemade cards and chocolates, and her innovative, interactive strategies at open houses helps to support promotion of our college and programs. Additionally, her homemade baked goods bring comfort and encouragement during busy times. Despite managing a heavy teaching load, doctoral studies, and family responsibilities, Amanda consistently demonstrates a caring, supportive attitude that enriches the entire college community.
Melanie Jones
Melanie Jones is known for taking on new initiatives and for her enthusiasm in enhancing teaching and learning. She approaches her work with a positive attitude and is deeply committed to professional development, often participating in classes and supporting her colleagues. Melanie also dedicates her time to volunteering at Arch, helping patients and families, and supports community fundraising efforts, such as, Hairs To You, by crocheting scrunchies for a cause that benefits those with hair loss. Melanie works hard to be innovative and is always supportive of those around her.
Elisa Muto
Elisa demonstrates unwavering support for students and the School of Natural Environment. Known for her kindness, genuine personality, and student-centred approach, she is appreciated by her colleagues and students. Elisa's extensive involvement includes leading the development of the Urban Ecosystem Technician program, managing the college’s entomology collection, and participating in various environmental and educational initiatives. She also actively supports local and international projects, such as the Tanzania Project, which empowers women with horticultural skills.
Brianne Shunock
Brianne has been pivotal in building a successful women’s hockey team at Sault College and has significantly impacted youth female hockey in Sault Ste. Marie. By creating a partnership with Sault Female Hockey, she has inspired young players and made them see postsecondary hockey as a real possibility. Her leadership has fostered a strong, family-like team spirit and earned respect both locally and nationally. Brianne is known for her effective coaching, attention to detail, and contributions to creating a new space for the hockey program at the Northern Community Centre.
