(Sault Ste. Marie, ON April 13, 2022) – Last night, Sault College staff, community members, students and supporters joined together to celebrate the outstanding academic accomplishments of our students at the 49th annual Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards (SBA) night. In addition to highlighting the amazing support of our donors, the evening saw more than 200 students honoured for their commitment to academic excellence and success.
“It is with great pride that our College highlights the commitment of our students and support of our donors through the Scholarship, Bursaries and Awards event. Throughout the past two years our students have overcome adversity while displaying a level of resiliency and commitment that is extraordinary,” said Dr. Ron Common, Sault College President.
“On behalf of Sault College, I would like to congratulate each of these students for their ongoing dedication to academic excellence. We would also like to thank all of the individual and corporate donors who stand behind these students through the SBA program. This program wouldn’t be possible without them and we are honoured that they’ve chosen to be champions for our students encouraging them to continue to strive for excellence,” he added.
During the 2021/22 academic year, more than $2 million will be distributed to more than 300 students through the SBA and other various bursary programs.
“The Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards evening is an important and exciting event to celebrate our students and the hard work and dedication throughout their academic year. Our celebration also provides the College with an opportunity to express its sincere appreciation to the donors that support our students through the SBA program. It is because of their generosity that many of our students are able to pursue higher education and we are tremendously grateful and humbled by their unwavering support,” said Katherine Kasch, Student Financial Services Coordinator Chair, SBA Committee.
This year, Jessica McNamee, a graduate of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Technician, was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Medal. Since 1873, Governor Generals of Canada have sponsored this medal to encourage and recognize excellent academics at various levels of the educational system. It is awarded to the student graduating from the previous year’s three-year program who has achieved the highest academic standing in the College in the final year of his/her program.
Each year, the generosity of donors who support Sault College students continues to grow. This year, several new awards have been established, each offering significant benefits to students. These include:
Captain Hollis Rutherford Tucker Memorial Award
Elevating the Future Award
Forest the Canoe Award
NORPRO Environment Award
