Canadian Criminal Justice

This course is designed to introduce the student to the historical, social, cultural, and legal factors necessary for an understanding of how justice is administered in Canada. Topics include origins of law, order and social control in society, the emergence of dispute settlement mechanisms, the evolution of social legal behavior with accompanying structures or systems, and applied research methods. The historical, contemporary, and probable future of each of the components of the legal and the justice systems will be presented. The dynamics of the interaction between society, the individual, and the interrelated components of the criminal justice system will be examined. The course will also introduce some contemporary criminological findings as well as cover major concepts, issues, and debates surrounding society`s approach to crime and justice.

College Communication Skills

This course is designed to help students develop the skills necessary to communicate effectively in their programs and at the college level. Students will think critically to capture the meaning of messages and respond appropriately, and produce coherent, clear paragraphs, essays, and summaries. They will also purposefully research and responsibly integrate credible sources into their own writing. Emphasis is placed on the writing process, from planning to revising, while providing opportunities to explore various modes of communication.

Communications I

This course is designed to help students develop the skills necessary to communicate effectively in their programs and at the college level. Students will think critically to capture the meaning of messages and respond appropriately, produce clear and coherent paragraphs, and purposefully research and responsibly integrate credible sources into their own writing. Emphasis is placed on the writing process, from planning to revising, while providing opportunities to explore various modes of communication. This course includes two hours of in-class instruction and one hour of independent study each week.

CYC Methods: Intro to the Profession

This course introduces students to the field of Child and Youth Care including a review of professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are uniquely those of competent Child and Youth Care practitioners. Students will develop an understanding of the history of the profession, roles and responsibilities of CYCs, ethical practice, developing personal self-awareness through reflection and understanding the needs of the children, youth and families that CYCs work with. An important objective for this course is for the student to begin to assess, develop and evaluate goals regarding their own personal and professional growth using reflective learning.

English as a Second Language

Reading, listening, writing and speaking skills are essential for success in academic, workplace and social environments. Through small group work, and individual practice students will have an opportunity to increase English language reading comprehension, fluency and vocabulary, listening skills and writing skills. This course is only open to students whose primary language is one other than English.

Introduction to Business Concepts

In this course, students will be introduced to business in Canada, focusing on introductory topics for those interested in employment in a business management role. Topics of study will include the relationships between the areas of finance, human resources, marketing, and operations within an organization, business ethics and social responsibility, management concepts and practices, and an exploration of the entrepreneurial spirit.

Introduction to Marketing

This course is a practical introduction into the world of strategic marketing. Students will become acquainted with current Canadian marketing concepts, terminology, and practices, examine strategies to apply them to contemporary marketing situations, and gain an understanding of how they affect an organization`s viability. Students will also explore consumer and business marketing, product planning, building customer relationships and creating customer value. This course provides a basic understanding of Canadian marketing structures and techniques including defining and segmenting target markets and interpreting market research data.

Introduction to Motive Power

In this course the student will learn basic aspects of four different but related trade areas: Automotive, Marine and Small Engines, Heavy Equipment and Truck Coach. The course will cover the shop and safety practices related to all of the trades and the student will learn to use the appropriate tools used in a safe working manner. The student will learn about the types of internal combustion engines used in these trade areas and learn to do basic maintenance to the engines. He or she will also learn about the, fuel, , suspension steering and braking systems used in the different types of vehicles and equipment used in the Motive Power Trades Areas. The student will be introduced to the computerized aspects involved in the Motive Power Trades from ordering of parts and supplies to the electronic computerized controls and diagnostics used on todays vehicles and equipment.

Introduction to Physical Activity and Wellness

This course will introduce and provide practical application of the concepts of health and wellness. Emphasis will be placed on taking control of individual health and lifestyle habits to improve overall wellness. Through examination of personal health and wellness choices, group discussion, hands-on activities, and investigation into community resources and programs, students will develop the skills necessary to apply these wellness skills to others.

Introduction to Psychology

A study of the science of psychology: its methods, concepts, and theories, including the topic areas of 1) brain, consciousness, sensation, and perception, 2) learning and memory, 3) intelligence, thought, and creativity, 4) motivation. Psychological concepts will be studied with a view towards how they can be applied to enhance the student`s understanding of psychological adaptation and the causes and consequences of human behaviour.

Introduction to Spanish

This course is designed to introduce the basics of the Spanish language with emphasis on understanding and speaking the language and mastering some of its basic structures. Spanish and Latin American cultural aspects are also stressed. The four communicative abilities are practiced in the course: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required. The course follows a communicative approach and authentic material such as commercials, brochures, and newspapers are used as part of the curriculum.

Machine Shop Fundamentals

This course will allow the student to develop the skills required to operate the various machines and equipment necessary to work safely and productively in a machining, manufacturing and maintenance setting with a focus on building parts or making repairs in industry. Special attention will be placed on accurate measurement and inspection.

Medical Terminology

This basic course will focus on the anatomical structure and function of the human body and related terminology used to describe body parts, structure and function. Related terminology will also include general or symptomatic terms, diagnostic terms, surgical procedures and abbreviations. This course is delivered 2 hours per week with an additional 1 hour per week of independent study.

Principles of PSW Practice I

This course will introduce the learner to the health care system, the team, the legislation that governs the role of the Personal Support Worker and the legal rights and responsibilities of the client, their family and the PSW. Concepts will be explored that pertain to building therapeutic relationships, ethics, values and beliefs, teamwork, working under supervision, and accepting and understanding delegation. Students will learn to interpret established plans of care and contribute to the plans` modification through appropriate observations, reporting and documenting.

Religions of the World

This course will provide a comprehensive survey of a wide range of religious traditions, both Eastern and Western, including Tribal Religions, Religions of Ancient Civilizations, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, Confucian, Taoist, Christian, Islamic, Atheist, Marxist and Existentialist. Students will examine the rich historical, cultural, and theological background of each tradition in terms of its original founders, views on nature, self, society and ultimate reality. Each religious tradition will be approached in an analytical and philosophical manner which will allow students to identify with and to maintain a distance from each of the traditions covered. The course will emphasize clarity, critical thinking and argumentation in an effort to gain an appreciation for the textual roots, fundamental concerns, similarities and differences of each religious tradition.
