Social Service Worker
1203 2 Years - 4 Semesters Ontario College Diploma
“I am a fortunate and appreciative graduate of the Sault College Social Service Worker Program, 2007. The interesting and comprehensive courses and the remarkable standard of instruction of the faculty thoroughly prepared me for the highly competitive job market in Northern Ontario. I learned the values and principles of the profession, developed an awareness and respect for the issues that challenge the people of our community and as a result I discovered the confidence within myself to turn my life around. The facultys vast experience and impeccable intuition guided me to a work placement in the last year of the program that led to extraordinary opportunities and four years employment in child welfare. The experience I had over those four terms inspired me to continue with my studies and ultimately enter the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) program at Algoma University the winter of 2011. I am truly grateful that I was able to access such a valuable program in such a small and welcoming community." ~ Andrew Sullivan
"The SSW program prepared me for the work force by creating a learning environment that teaches best practice, was comfortable, enticing and interactive. The program allows you to network amongst the social service community through placements, the community walk designed by SSW and CYWs, and communication through the great professors. This program has really changed my life. I am so happy working in my field. I have been able to grow, expand my knowledge, and gained enormous admiration for the wonderful teachers I have had the pleasure of working with. If you are looking for a hands on program that will prepare you for a career in the social service field, this is the program for you! I am currently employed as a crisis worker for Sault Area Hospital and a casual crisis counsellor at a local Womens Crisis Centre." ~ Sarah Wardlaw, SSW Graduate 2004
"The Social Service Worker Program at Sault College set the foundation for my future academic career. Sault College, taught how to improve in my writing abilities, as well as taught me how to be a critical thinker. I was able to successfully initiate my academic abilities from the materials learned while being a student in this program. My second year SSW placement at the Childrens Aid Society had great impact on my decision to further my education. Without the base that I had gained at Sault College, I would not have been as successful in University. Additionally, I received advanced credit with my diploma, facilitating my completion of BSW in three years versus four years with the bonus of financial savings as well. Understanding core social work skills, theory, and hands on practise that the SSW program offered prepared me for working hands on in the community. I believe greatly in the Social Work philosophy, and I am thankful for my knowledge, skills, and development on a personal and professional level that I received from the Social Service Worker Program and its staff." ~ Shelaugh Manuel
