Sault College Celebrates Student Athletes at Annual Awards Night
Sault Ste. Marie, ON, April 3, 2018 – This evening, Sault College held its annual athletic awards night at Grand Gardens North. The evening saw a crowd of student athletes, coaches and distinguished guests gather together to celebrate the achievements of the student athletes both in their sport and the classroom.
The 2017-2018 year saw the Cougars field teams in Golf, Cross Country, Curling, Basketball, Hockey and Indoor Soccer – this includes 103 student athletes, and 23 coaches who put on the Cougar colours to represent the college in collegiate athletics in both Canada and the USA. Among some of the awards given out tonight were most valuable player, most defensive player and rookie of the year in each sport.
The night also saw the presentation of long standing awards to student athletes who in their day-to-day lives represent their respective teams and Sault College as a whole at an exemplary level:
G.R. Hodgson Award
Megan Turcotte (Sault Ste. Marie/Police Foundations) – Women’s Hockey
Ryan Vendramin (Sault Ste. Marie/Police Foundations) – Men’s Hockey & Golf
Gerry McGuire Award
Taylor Nadeau (Sault Ste. Marie/ OTA/PTA) – Women’s Hockey & Women’s Soccer
Patrick Vardy (Sault Ste. Marie/Coach) – Cross Country
Cougar Pride Award
Mackenzie Mazzuca (Sault Ste. Marie/Early Childhood Education) – Women’s Basketball
Parker Jackson (Newmarket/NAT Environment Tech) – Cross Country
The festivities concluded with the naming of our Athletes of the Year presented by Sault College President Dr. Ron Common. The Female Athlete of the Year winner was varsity curler Taylor Longo (Sault Ste. Marie/Business) who took home the prestigious award who is just starting her sporting career at the college. Taylor, the vice of the mixed curling team, was part of the mixed team that took home an OCAA Gold medal at Provincials in February.
The Ross Bachert Male Athlete of the Year went to varsity two sport athlete, Nick Servant (Sault Ste. Marie/Police Foundations, who participated in curling and basketball.). Servant’s year saw him earn 1st Team OCAA All-star along with OCAA All Academic and a CCAA Academic All Canadian status while capturing an OCAA Men’s Silver medal.
The Cougars Athletic department would like to wish all of its graduating student athletes good luck and thank all of our coaches and staff who made the year’s successes possible through their hard work and dedication. The Cougars are looking forward to the next season as they welcome in a new year of recruits and the pursuit of both provincial and national glory.
